Soul Chat lets adults (18+) talk with the souls: AI characters, not people. This protocol covers Soul Chat on the website (including Vessel) and in the Souls iPhone app. The souls are for conversation and entertainment. They are not therapy, counselling, or medical, legal or financial advice, and they are not a crisis service.
Every message is checked on our server for signs of suicide, self-harm, abuse or immediate danger before anything else happens: before the 18+ check, before any rate limit and before any AI model sees it. The check reads slang, misspellings and spaced-out or disguised words too. It is tuned to miss as little as possible: a false alarm costs one out-of-character message, a miss can cost far more.
When a message matches, the AI never sees it. The person gets this fixed reply, the same every time:
I'm stepping out of character for a moment. I'm an AI character, not a person, but what you just said matters, and so do you. In the US you can call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: free, confidential, 24/7). If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. Outside the US, findahelpline.com lists free helplines in your country.
In the iPhone app the reply is always shown in full, with buttons to call 988, text 988, call 911 and find a helpline.
For the person's next 5 messages after a crisis message or reply, the character drops its persona. It speaks plainly, warmly and briefly; it does not talk about markets, money, cards or crypto; it takes what the person says seriously without diagnosing or lecturing; and it encourages reaching a real person through 988, 911 or findahelpline.com when that fits.
Every reply is checked on our server before it is shown. A reply that gives money directions, has explicit sexual content or repeats the character's instructions is replaced with a short fixed line, and when such a reply was pointing someone to help, it is replaced with the crisis reply above instead.
Every soul is labelled as an AI character. The iPhone app shows "You're talking with an AI character, not a person." at the start of every conversation, and a reminder at least every three hours of continued use.
Soul Chat is for people 18 and older, and companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors. Chat opens only after a person confirms they are 18 or older. In the iPhone app, a person who answers that they are under 18, or says so in the chat and confirms it, cannot chat.
The crisis check and the fixed reply follow the referral the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline asks for: point the person to 988 (call or text), to 911 in an emergency, and to local helplines outside the US. The check was tuned on one set of synthetic example messages and is measured on a separate, held-out set it was never tuned on. The example messages it once missed are part of our automated tests, so a change to its rules cannot quietly undo them.
We count how many times a year Soul Chat points someone to crisis help. The count holds no message text, IP address or anything else about the person. We use it for the yearly report California law requires. Nothing else about crisis messages is kept; see the Privacy Policy.
